Brazilian Architect Oscar Niemeyer Turns 102

One of the 20th century’s greatest architects celebrates his 102nd birthday today.  Oscar Niemeyer is arguably Brazil’s most significant architect of the modern era, having worked at the epicenter of the South American nation’s architectural renaissance.  His works include the Cathedral of Brasilia, the National Congress of Brazil, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum and the Palácio da Alvorada, the residence of Brazil’s president.  To put that in context, imagine if one architect was responsible for the White House, the United States Congress and many of our other government buildings…

We salute Mr. Niemeyer on his 102nd birthday today, and wish him many more.  To learn more about Oscar Niemeyer, take a look at some of his works in our feature on Brazilian Architecture.  Also, visit the blog of Brazilian architectural photographer Leonardo Finotti, who has taken many of the photos below.  Thanks to ArchDaily for alerting us of the news earlier today.

  • One of my favorite architects and it is amazing to find his birthday is one day after my father’s (who would be 110) as of yesterday.

Brilliant masterpieces of architecture of which we are the beneficiaries.

  • simplesmente sublime….

  • I admire Oscar let’s hope he lives to a very grand old age.
