Leatherman Tread Wearable Multitool Watch Bracelet

Early on, I noticed a common problem with my first Leatherman multitool. Whenever I needed it, I had left it behind. Multitools are designed to be mobile gadgets that are always in reach when you need them, provided you keep them handy. Keeping them handy always been a problem for me — but it’s apparently one that Leatherman was keen to solve. Leatherman just introduced the Leatherman Tread, a wearable multitool bracelet that holds a large set of tools in a compact, wearable unit. It’s a bracelet, it’s a multitool, it’s bad ass.

The Leatherman Tread is a stainless steel bracelet where each link is a usable tool. These links feature allen wrenches, screwdrivers, box wrenches, a bottle opener and more. 25 tools in total. They all join to form a full-size bracelet, and can be taken apart quickly as needed to serve different needs. It’s the same familiar functionality of a typical Leatherman, but in an entirely different form.

The back story of the Leatherman Tread should be familiar to Leatherman owners. Or at least any Leatherman owner who has tried to travel with their multitool:

“The idea originated on a trip to Disneyland with my family,” said President Ben Rivera. “I was stopped at the gate by security for carrying a knife, when what they had actually seen was my Skeletool. I was unwilling to give it up, so they made me take it all the way back to my hotel room. I knew there had to be another way to carry my tools with me that would be accepted by security.” When he returned from his trip, Rivera, who began his tenure at Leatherman Tool Group 24 years ago as an engineer, began by wearing a bike chain bracelet to see how it would feel. As his thoughts took shape, he brought his idea to the engineers at Leatherman who helped fast track his plans.

The Leatherman Tread bracelet is coming in the fall of 2015 for $150 in stainless steel and $200 in black. There’s another version of the Tread with the QM1 watch by Leatherman which will be available between $500 and $600.
