No more streaks: one product makes windows really clean

You spend an hour cleaning the windows, step back, and everything looks perfect. Then the sun comes out, and every streak shows. The product is rarely the problem. In most cases, it is the residue it leaves behind. One inexpensive product from the medicine cabinet makes the difference.

That product is rubbing alcohol, the isopropyl alcohol most households keep for first aid. A small splash in the cleaning water is enough.

Why windows streak in the first place

Streaks are leftovers. Too much soap, a dirty cloth, hard tap water that dries into white marks, or a greasy film that gets smeared around instead of lifted. Many people also make the same mistake: they clean on a bright, sunny day. Cleaning-industry experts in Germany, where window washing is something of a national sport, repeat the same rule: never clean glass in direct sun. The heat dries the water before you can wipe it, and the residue stays on the glass.

That is why an overcast fall Saturday is ideal. The glass stays cool, the water dries slowly, and you have time to work. The same goes for the time of day: early morning or late afternoon, when the panes are in the shade, gives the best result. Do the inside and the outside on the same day, too, otherwise it is impossible to tell which side the remaining marks are on.

Why rubbing alcohol works

Alcohol does two things. It dissolves the greasy film left by fingerprints, cooking and outdoor pollution, and it evaporates quickly and evenly, so it doesn’t leave drying marks. Window-cleaning equipment maker Kärcher recommends exactly this: a dash of alcohol in warm water for streak-free glass.

Here is the method:

  • Mix the water. Fill a bucket with warm water and add a small splash of rubbing alcohol. At most, add a single drop of dish soap.
  • Start with the frames. Clean the frames and sills first, so the dirty water doesn’t run onto clean glass afterward.
  • Wash the glass. Use a sponge or a microfiber cloth to apply the solution to the whole pane.
  • Squeegee from top to bottom. Work in straight lines and wipe the rubber blade with a cloth after each pass.
  • Finish the edges. Buff the corners and edges with a dry microfiber cloth.

Two small mistakes that ruin the result

The first is fabric softener. Microfiber cloths washed with softener get a coating that leaves a film on the glass. Wash them with regular detergent only. The second is overloading the bucket: more soap does not mean cleaner glass, just more residue to remove.

A word of caution: rubbing alcohol is flammable. Use only a small amount, keep the room ventilated, and keep it away from open flames. If your glass has white hard-water spots, a little white vinegar on a cloth takes care of them before the main wash.

Clean windows also make it easier to spot condensation in the morning, a sign that your bedroom habits might need a change.

Warm water, a splash of alcohol, no sun, a squeegee. That’s the trick.
