You’ve probably wiped it down twice this month. A little frost creeping down the back wall, a puddle showing up under the crisper drawer on a Sunday morning, maybe a thin sheet of ice you have to chip off the floor before you can slide the veggie drawer back in.

You blamed the humidity. You blamed the kids leaving the door open. You told yourself it’s just what old fridges do.

It isn’t the humidity. It isn’t the kids. And your fridge probably isn’t old enough to be dying yet.

If the same puddle keeps coming back in the same spot week after week, something small and hidden inside your refrigerator has quietly stopped doing its job. Most people have never seen it. Most people don’t even know it’s there. And once it stops working, everything you’re mopping up is a symptom, not the real cause.

This isn’t just annoying, it’s a food safety problem

That little sheet of ice matters way more than most people think.

The FDA says your fridge needs to stay at 40°F (4°C) or below to keep food safe. Warmer than that and you slip into what the USDA calls the “danger zone,” where bacteria can double in as little as 20 minutes.

The way your fridge holds that temperature isn’t magic, it’s airflow. And a sheet of ice sitting on the floor, right under the crispers, is one of the best ways to block that airflow. Your milk on the top shelf might still be cold. The lettuce sitting on top of that frozen slab probably isn’t as cold as your thermometer says.

On top of that, the standing water smells, mildew grows in it fast, your fridge motor works harder (bigger electric bill), and if the puddle sneaks under the door onto wood or laminate, you’ll see warping in weeks.

It’s a food, floor, and appliance problem all stacked on top of each other, and it all comes from one thing that’s quietly failed.

Why the frost keeps coming back in the same spot

Every modern fridge, the kind you never have to defrost yourself, runs a hidden cycle a few times a day. A small heater behind the back wall warms up the cooling coils and melts off the thin layer of frost that’s built up on them. Then it shuts off and cooling kicks back in.

That melted frost has to go somewhere.

In a fridge that’s working right, all of it drains away quietly into a shallow tray at the back, where it dries into the air. You never see it. You never smell it. You never think about it.

In a fridge that’s not working right, that water has nowhere to go.

So it pools on the floor of the compartment. Because the inside is cold, it freezes into a thin sheet within a few hours. The next melt cycle piles more water on top. That freezes too. Over days and weeks the sheet gets thicker, frost starts creeping up the back wall because moisture that should be leaving is now hanging in the air, and eventually the whole mess overflows onto your kitchen floor.

You can wipe it up all you want. Until the water can drain again, it’s coming right back.

Most people never figure this out on their own. They try the obvious things. They lower the fridge temperature, thinking the ice means it’s running too cold (it doesn’t). They check the door seal, thinking warm air is sneaking in (that’s not the cause either). Some people even unplug the whole fridge for hours to let it thaw, mop it dry, and plug it back in, only to see the exact same puddle a week later. The ice sheet is a symptom of a blocked exit, and until you clear the exit, the problem keeps rebuilding.

The tiny hole almost nobody has ever looked at

The escape route for all that meltwater is a drain hole about the size of a pencil eraser (roughly 5 mm across), hidden at the base of the back wall inside your fridge. From there, water runs down a small tube into a tray at the back.

On bottom-freezer and French-door fridges, that hole is in the main food section, low on the back wall or just behind the crispers. GE Appliances’ own service instructions put it in that exact spot. On side-by-side and top-freezer models, the same drain is in the freezer, usually behind a plastic panel held on with one screw.

Wherever yours is, the hole is small, and small holes clog. A drop of sauce over the years, a fleck of dried onion skin, a bit of slime that builds up in all that moisture. Once anything blocks the opening even a little, the next round of meltwater backs up, freezes into a plug right in the drain, and now it’s completely sealed shut. Every melt cycle after that just dumps more water into a compartment with no way to empty.

Repair Clinic, one of the biggest appliance parts and repair sites in North America, lists a frozen or clogged defrost drain as one of the most common reasons for water pooling inside a fridge. It’s not rare. It’s just invisible until you know to look for it.

The five-minute fix that costs you nothing

Total cost, zero dollars. Total time, about ten minutes.

  1. Unplug the fridge. You’ll be near a heating element and pouring water inside. Pull the plug first.
  2. Find the drain hole. On a bottom-freezer or French-door model, empty the crispers and look at the base of the back wall for a tiny hole the size of a pencil eraser (5 mm), sometimes sitting inside a small plastic channel. On a side-by-side or top-freezer, do the same inside the freezer, usually behind a plastic panel held on by one screw.
  3. Melt any ice plug first. If the hole is frozen shut, don’t force water through it. Use a hair dryer on low held about a foot (30 cm) away, or drape a cloth soaked in hot tap water over the spot for a couple of minutes. Don’t ever chip at ice inside your fridge with a knife, screwdriver, or anything sharp and metal. The cooling coils behind that back panel are thin aluminum tubes. Poke a hole in one and a free fix becomes a whole new fridge.
  4. Flush the drain. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda into two cups (about 500 ml) of hot tap water. Draw it up with a turkey baster or bulb syringe and squeeze it slowly into the drain hole. GE Appliances’ instructions call for exactly this mix. When the drain clears, you’ll hear water trickle down inside the wall into the tray at the back. That sound is what you want.
  5. Wipe up the water, plug it back in, give it a day. Any ice left on the floor will melt on its own once the drain works again, and the frost on the back wall should stop returning within a melt cycle or two.

When the fix isn’t enough

If the puddle comes back within a week or two, the drain isn’t your only problem. Repair Clinic points to the small fan inside the freezer as the next likely culprit. If it quits, cold air settles into the drain and freezes it up faster than any cycle can clear. That’s when to call a technician.
