Kitchen sink smells like sewer? This dead-simple trick kills the smell at the root

You poured bleach down the kitchen sink. The smell went away for maybe an hour. Then the rotten-egg stink drifted right back up, worse by dinner. So you poured more. Same story. Now you’re wondering if something’s really wrong with your plumbing.

The weird part: the smell is real, it really is sewer gas, and it’s worth paying attention to. But bleach was never going to fix it. Not because you didn’t use enough. Not because you need a stronger brand. Bleach is the wrong tool for what’s actually going on down there, and it can quietly make things worse the more you pour.

The real fix takes about 15 seconds (yes, seconds) and costs you nothing. No trip to Home Depot. No plumber. No chemicals. But to see why it works, you first have to see why grabbing the bleach was the wrong move.

Your nose isn’t lying to you

That rotten-egg smell coming out of your drain has a name that plumbers and health agencies use for it: sewer gas. The stinky part is a gas called hydrogen sulfide, and it’s mixed in with a few other gases from the sewer line under your house.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says it flat out: hydrogen sulfide is one of the things that can get into your home through “sewer drains that have dry traps.” The CDC’s toxic substances division (ATSDR) adds that people can smell this stuff at incredibly low amounts, and that being around it for a while can give you eye irritation, headaches, and that dragged-out tired feeling. A single kitchen sink almost never gets you to dangerous levels. But it’s not something you want drifting into your house day after day either.

One thing worth knowing: at higher amounts, this gas actually numbs your sense of smell. Your nose stops noticing it. You think it went away. It didn’t. That’s why the pattern of “smells awful, then fades, then comes back” is so common with this problem.

Why the bleach didn’t work (and might be making things worse)

Bleach kills germs. Your problem isn’t germs. That one sentence explains the whole thing.

Oatey, one of the biggest plumbing brands in America (the fittings under a huge number of US sinks have their name on them), puts it in their own homeowner guide: pouring bleach down the drain “will not eliminate sewer gas smell because bleach doesn’t address the underlying cause… While bleach may temporarily mask odors or kill bacteria, it can damage pipes and doesn’t fix the structural issues allowing gas to escape.”

In plain English: bleach kills whatever germs are stuck to the inside of your pipe, then washes down and out. But the smell isn’t coming from stuff growing in your drain. It’s coming from further down, and something that’s supposed to block that gas from coming up simply isn’t doing its job anymore.

A couple more reasons to put the bleach bottle down. About 1 in 5 American homes runs on a septic system, and bleach kills the good bacteria your tank needs. And mixing bleach with vinegar or an ammonia cleaner can make actually poisonous fumes right at the sink.

So bleach isn’t the answer. What actually is? To see that, you have to look at something that’s been sitting under your sink your whole life without you noticing.

The little curve of pipe doing the whole job

Open the cabinet under your kitchen sink and look. The drain pipe doesn’t just go straight down. It dips into a U-shape (or a P-shape lying on its side), then keeps going down into the floor. That curve has a name: a P-trap. Every drain in your house has one. Kitchen sink, bathroom sink, tub, shower, laundry, basement floor drain. Every single one.

The P-trap has one job. It holds a small puddle of water inside that bend, and that puddle is a wall of water between your kitchen and the sewer line. Sewer gas can’t push past water sitting in a pipe. It’s not chemistry. It’s just water plugging a hole. Both major American plumbing rulebooks require this water seal on every drain, and both call out water evaporating as the failure they were written to prevent.

And now the payoff. When a drain doesn’t get used for a couple of weeks, the water in that little curve slowly dries up. No water, no wall. No wall, the pipe from your house to the sewer is basically wide open. Sewer gas floats right up and into your kitchen through the drain cover, like smoke up a chimney.

Plumbing sources say a P-trap fully dries out in about 2 to 3 weeks with no water going through it, faster in a heated or air-conditioned house with dry air. The usual victims are guest bathrooms, basement floor drains, and laundry drains during a vacation. But your kitchen sink can dry out too if you’ve been eating out, traveling, or only using one side of a double sink.

Bleach pouring right past that dry curve does nothing. Water is what fixes it.

The fix, in 15 seconds

Turn on your cold tap and let it run for a solid 10 to 15 seconds.

That’s it. You just refilled the little puddle inside the P-trap, rebuilt the water wall, and shut off the sewer gas at the source. The smell starts fading in minutes as the seal comes back and leftover gas clears out. If it’s gone within an hour and stays gone for a couple of weeks, dry P-trap was the problem, and running the tap was the whole fix. South Davis Sewer District, a public water agency, tells homeowners to pour a cup or two (240 to 480 ml) of water into any drains you barely use, and to run water in every fixture at least once a month.

Same trick works on a basement floor drain, laundry drain, or guest bathroom sink. For a floor drain, pour a cup or two of water (240 to 480 ml) straight down the grate. Do this every two weeks in any drain you don’t use much, and the smell won’t come back. In dry-winter homes up north with the heat blasting, once a week.

One more trick for drains that keep drying out

Got a basement floor drain that dries out over and over? After you fill the trap with water, pour a tablespoon (about 15 ml) of plain mineral oil on top. Oil floats, doesn’t dry up as fast as water, and caps the seal for weeks instead of days. Cheap, safe, doesn’t hurt your pipes or your septic.

Want a totally hands-off, permanent fix? A barrier-type trap seal (sold as Green Drain or Sure-Seal) pops into a floor drain and blocks gas mechanically, no water needed. About $20 to $30 (roughly €18 to €28) per drain, done.

When it’s actually time to call a plumber

If you run the water, wait an hour, and the smell is still there or comes back in a day or two, it isn’t a dry trap. Time to call a plumber. A few other things look the same from up top: a cracked P-trap leaking at a joint, a bad wax ring under a nearby toilet, or a blocked roof vent that’s actually sucking water out of your trap.

The refill-and-see test is how plumbers themselves start figuring this out. Water fixes it, you’re done. Water doesn’t, you know it’s something bigger.
