You slide the dimmer down for movie night, and there it is again. That soft, papery buzz coming from the lamp. The light shivers a little at low settings, almost like it’s breathing. You tap the switch. You wiggle the bulb. Nothing changes.
So you do what most people do. You blame the switch. It’s old, right? Or maybe the bulb’s a dud from that cheap four-pack. You screw in a fresh one. Same buzz. Same shimmer. You end up on Amazon at midnight, comparing $40 replacement switches you don’t really want to buy.
But what if the switch is totally fine? And the bulb, in a way, is fine too? What if the real reason your lights are buzzing has been wired into that wall for years, and nobody at the hardware store ever mentioned it?

This is way more common than you think
If you’ve swapped incandescent bulbs (the old glowing kind) for LEDs in the last few years, you’re the target audience for this quiet little headache. Electricians see it all week long.
According to Zimmerman Electric Company, the buzz-and-flicker complaint is “one of the most common complaints after switching to LEDs, and it is almost never a defective bulb.” [1] 1000Bulbs, one of the biggest lighting suppliers in the US, points to the same culprit as the top cause of LED flickering in home fixtures. [2] And Lutron, which basically invented the modern home dimmer, built an entire product line and a free online tool just to fix this exact problem. [3]
So if it’s happening in your house, you didn’t do anything wrong. You just got handed a mismatch nobody flagged for you. Before we get to the fix, it helps to know what’s really going on inside the wall, because once you see it, the solution is almost embarrassingly simple.
What’s really going on (told the way a friend would tell you)
Old incandescent bulbs (the hot filament kind your grandma had) were dumb in a helpful way. They drank about 60 watts each in a steady gulp. A dimmer just chopped that power on and off super fast, and the filament didn’t notice. It only got a little cooler and glowed a little softer.
LED bulbs work nothing like that. Inside every LED there’s a tiny electronic brain (the industry calls it a “driver”). Its job: take the messy AC power from your wall and turn it into the clean, steady power the LED chip needs. That brain expects a smooth signal.
When an old dimmer chops the power the way it used to for a filament bulb, the LED’s brain gets confused. Zimmerman Electric puts it in one line: the light output wavers (your flicker) and tiny parts inside vibrate at a high frequency you can hear (your buzz). [1]
Now pile on a second problem. A modern LED bulb only sips about 8 to 10 watts, roughly one-seventh of what an incandescent pulled. Your old dimmer was built to feed a hungry 60-watt bulb. Suddenly it’s feeding a snack, and, as Wired Up Electrical puts it, “it can’t do it smoothly, so it buzzes, flickers, or does both.” [4]
So the real culprit isn’t one broken part. It’s two parts in your wall that were never designed to talk to each other. Your old dimmer was built for a bulb type barely sold anymore, and your new LED expects a smarter dimmer you don’t have yet. Both are fine on their own. Together, they buzz.
There’s also a hidden cost. If the bulb is a non-dimmable LED (yes, that’s a thing, and they’re usually the cheaper ones), LED Lighting Info is blunt: those bulbs “will buzz, flicker, or fail prematurely on any dimmer.” [5] How-To Geek adds that at any setting below 100%, you’re stress-testing the bulb’s internal parts, which is why the cheap ones keep burning out every few months. The 2-minute fix (in the exact order pros do it)
You don’t need an electrician for the first two steps, and you won’t touch a wire. The whole thing usually runs under $30 (roughly €27, £24) for a typical room.

Step 1. Check the bulb box for the word “dimmable.” Not just “LED.” Not just “soft white.” The literal word dimmable on the packaging. If it’s missing, that bulb was never made for a dimmer. Swap it. Dimmable LED bulbs run about $3 to $8 each (roughly €3 to €7).
Step 2. Read the label on your dimmer switch. Look at the front plate. If it says “CL,” “C·L,” “LED+,” or “universal,” you already have an LED-friendly dimmer, and step 1 alone probably solves it. If it just says “dimmer” with no LED marking, or it’s been on that wall since before about 2010, you likely have the old kind built for incandescents. LED Lighting Info says the goal is to pair dimmable bulbs with “an LED-rated dimmer (CL, C·L, or universal), preferably one using trailing-edge or adaptive phase-cut.” [7] A basic LED-rated wall dimmer costs about $15 to $25 (roughly €14 to €23).
Step 3 (the one almost every article skips). Check the total wattage on the circuit. This is the sneaky one that keeps people buzzing even after they buy the “right” bulb. Most LED dimmers need a minimum load, often 25 to 40 watts, per LED Lighting Info‘s testing. [8] A single 9-watt LED bulb by itself falls below that floor, so it can still buzz even when the bulb and dimmer are both correct. The fix: add a second bulb to the fixture, or pick a dimmer rated for very low loads. That’s it. The bulbs go in with a twist. The dimmer, if you need a new one, is a single-screwdriver swap, or about $75 (roughly €70) for an electrician.
One more thing worth knowing
If your dimmer switch gets warm to the touch, or you’ve ever seen a spark when you flip it, stop and call a licensed electrician. That’s a wiring issue, not a bulb one. Buzzing that changes as you slide the dimmer is a compatibility problem you can fix yourself. Buzzing on a plain on/off switch (no dimmer at all) points to loose connections, according to Rock Lighting & Electric, and that’s not a DIY job. [9]
Quick note for the smart-home crowd: if you’ve got Hue, Kasa, or any other smart bulb, those already dim wirelessly and should never be wired through a dimmer switch, per LED Lighting Info. [7] Use a plain on/off switch on the wall, and let the app do the dimming.
