You wash the dishes. You rinse the sponge. You give it a good squeeze. A few hours later, you pick it up and there it is again. That faint, sour, wet-laundry smell.
You’ve probably tried everything. You microwaved it. You soaked it in vinegar. You bought a new one. Within a week, the new one smells just the same. So you buy the fancy sponge next time. Same result.
The strange part? You aren’t doing anything wrong that you can see. You’re doing one thing wrong that you can’t see. And it has almost nothing to do with the sponge itself.

What’s actually living in there
Your kitchen sponge isn’t just a little dirty. It’s the dirtiest thing in your whole home. By a lot.
In 2011, a health group called NSF International tested 30 things across 22 homes to see which held the most germs. The kitchen sponge came in first. Not the toilet seat. Not the doorknob. The sponge. Germs that show up in poop (called coliform) were found on 77% of sponges tested. Yeast and mold showed up on 86%.
Then in 2017, a German scientist named Markus Egert at Furtwangen University pulled 14 used sponges out of real kitchens and ran DNA tests on what was living inside. His team found 362 different kinds of germs, and in some spots, the count hit 54 billion germs per cubic centimeter (about the size of a sugar cube). That’s roughly what you’d find in a sample of human poop. The study ran in the journal Scientific Reports.

Why a sponge? Jason Tetro, a germ scientist and author of The Germ Code, puts it simply. Sponges are full of tiny holes, giving germs a huge amount of hiding space inside. They stay wet, warm, and full of little bits of food. Put it together and the number of germs inside can double every 30 to 60 minutes.
That sour smell has a name. It’s a germ called Moraxella osloensis, the same one that makes wet laundry stink. It eats the leftover fat from your dishes and lets out a fatty waste. That waste is the smell. You’re not smelling “dirt.” You’re smelling what a live germ colony is putting out, hour after hour.
Why the sponge you just bought smells too
This is the part most people miss.
Clemson University tested sponges used by students for three weeks. After just one week, each sponge held about 400,000 germs. By weeks two and three, that number jumped to 20 million per sponge. A brand new sponge, dropped into the same kitchen with the same habits, gets there just as quickly. Which means the sponge isn’t the problem. The kitchen it lives in is.
You’ve probably tried the microwave trick. The USDA (the government’s food safety folks) tested it and found that microwaving a damp sponge for one full minute kills over 99% of the germs. Sounds like a solved problem. It isn’t.
Egert’s team went back and checked sponges from real homes, where people microwaved or soaked them regularly. Those “cleaned” sponges had just as many germs as sponges that were never cleaned at all. Worse, the germs that survived tended to be the tougher kind, the ones more likely to make you sick. Cleaning works once. Then the colony grows back stronger.
A food scientist named Jennifer Quinlan from Drexel University said it plain: “Nobody would recommend hot, soapy water as a way to clean a sponge.” The soap and warm water you rinse with are actually part of the perfect growing setup for the germs.
So think about it. New sponges get gross in a week. Microwaving doesn’t hold. Bleach doesn’t hold. Yet millions of kitchens do just fine without a sour-smelling sponge every other day. What are those people doing that you aren’t?
The one thing keeping your sponge wet all day
Every food safety expert who’s studied this lands on the same answer. It’s not about how you clean the sponge. It’s about what happens to it in the 12 hours between uses.
Germs in a sponge need water to keep growing. Take away the water, growth stops. A Norwegian food research group called Nofima compared sponges to dish brushes and found the brushes dried out in about 4.5 hours, so the germs died off. The sponges stayed wet, and the germs hit their top number in 1 to 3 days, then stayed there.
Your sponge is almost certainly sitting in one of three spots right now, and all three keep it wet.

- Spot one: flat on the floor of the sink. It sits in the leftover rinse water. The bottom side never gets any air. Twelve hours later, it’s still soaked.
- Spot two: inside a plastic caddy stuck to the sink wall. Even worse. Water pools in the bottom, the sponge sits in that puddle, and the closed walls block airflow. The spot that looks most organized is actually the worst.
- Spot three: in a closed cabinet or drawer. Dark, damp, no air. The USDA warns against this one by name.
- If your sponge lives in any of these spots, no cleaning trick will get you more than a couple of good days.
The fix: cheap, fast, and it actually works
The fix is a little embarrassing in how simple it is. It’s also the only thing that works long-term, because it goes after the water, not the germs.
After every use:
1. Wring it hard. Not a soft squeeze. Twist it end to end until no more water comes out.
2. Get it off the sink floor and out of any closed caddy. Flat storage is the whole problem, right there.
3. Stand it up so air can hit every side. The goal is airflow all the way around. A few options that all work:
- A wire mesh or slotted sponge holder with an open shape, about $2 to $4 (roughly €2 to €4) at any grocery store.
- A suction-cup holder on the outside of the sink with open sides, not a solid plastic bin.
- A corner of your dish rack, where the sponge can lean upright against the wires.
- The free version, first shared by home site Hunker: clip one short end of the sponge in a metal binder clip, then stand the clip up on its two little handles. The sponge dries straight up in the air. Costs nothing.
4. Swap in a new one every 1 to 2 weeks. Drying it out buys you time. It doesn’t make the sponge last forever. When it smells even after drying, or when it looks torn or off-color, toss it. That’s the guidance from Clemson.
5. Never use your dish sponge on raw meat juice. Grab a paper towel for that job and throw it straight in the trash. That’s a USDA rule, not just a suggestion. Same goes for wiping up around the trash can or the pet food bowl. Keep a separate cloth for those.
6. Keep a second sponge for surfaces, not dishes. If you clean counters with a sponge, get a second one in a different color so you never mix them up. Dishes get one, counters get the other. Mixing the two jobs is one of the fastest ways to spread raw-food germs across your kitchen, per the USDA.
That’s the whole thing. Two seconds of wringing, a $2 holder or a free binder clip, and the habit of picking the sponge up off the sink floor.
