Every fall, the same call comes in. A homeowner smells burning plastic, follows it to the corner of the bedroom, and finds a power strip that has gone soft and brown around one of its outlets. Nothing caught fire this time. Bobby Lynn, a residential electrician who runs LiveWire Electrical in Charlotte, North Carolina, has seen enough of these to keep a short list of what should never go into a strip. Four appliances are on it, and most homes have every one of them.
Power strips are useful, which is exactly the problem. They turn one wall outlet into six, they sit behind furniture where nobody thinks about them, and they carry a reassuring little switch that suggests they can handle anything. According to Lynn, that assumption causes a large share of the trouble he is called out to fix. Strips are built for low-draw electronics, not for anything that heats, cools, or runs a compressor.
Why the strip melts before the breaker trips
The math is simple and rarely explained. A typical power strip is rated for about 1,800 watts across all its outlets. A portable space heater on its high setting pulls around 1,500 watts on its own, which is about 12.5 amps on a standard 120-volt circuit. That leaves almost no headroom before the strip is overloaded, even if nothing else is plugged in.
The strip’s own wiring is thinner than the wiring in your wall, so it heats up faster under load. Electricians describe strips that melted and even ignited because they were used with high-demand devices. The Electrical Safety Foundation International says heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the U.S., with more than 65,000 fires attributed to it each year, and fire departments post photos of melted strips every fall for a reason.
The four appliances on the list
Space heaters. The most common offender, and the one that starts fires. Fire safety officials recommend plugging space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or power strip, and not plugging any other device into the same outlet while the heater runs. If the cord doesn’t reach, move the heater, not the plug.
Microwaves. The moment you press start, a microwave draws between 12 and 15 amps, which is close to the full capacity of most standard strips. Kitchen outlets are designed for that kind of load. A lightweight strip on the counter is not.
Refrigerators and freezers. These run all day, cycling on and off, and each restart of the compressor sends a surge through the cord. Lynn points out that beyond the fire risk, power fluctuations through a strip can damage the compressor itself, which turns a safety issue into an expensive repair.
Hair dryers. The one people forget, because it lives in the bathroom or bedroom rather than the kitchen. Hair dryers pull a large amount of power very quickly, which is why electricians say to plug them straight into a wall outlet, ideally a GFCI outlet near water.
What a strip is actually for
None of this means throwing your power strips away. Lamps, phone chargers, a TV, a laptop, a router: these draw a fraction of what a strip can carry, and a decent surge-protecting strip is the right place for them. The rule Lynn gives his clients is short. If it gets hot or has a motor, it goes in the wall.
Two habits make the rest safer. Look for a UL certification mark on any strip you buy, and never plug one strip into another to reach further, a practice electricians call daisy-chaining that doubles the load on the first strip. If a room genuinely doesn’t have enough outlets, that is a sign the wiring needs an electrician, not another adapter.
The same logic applies to anything that heats. The washing machine and dryer belong in the wall for the same reason the space heater does. And if your kitchen still has a strip running along the counter for the toaster and the coffee maker, that outlet shortage is worth adding to the list next time you have work done.
It takes a minute to walk through the house and check where the four appliances are plugged in. Lynn’s clients usually find at least one on a strip. That’s the trick.
