You turn on the kitchen tap and the water dribbles out weak. Or it shoots sideways and hits the edge of the sink. Or it takes forever to fill a pot when every other faucet in the house works fine. So you start looking up new faucets, or thinking about calling a plumber.
Hold off on both. There’s one small part on that faucet almost nobody in America has ever touched, and in most homes with weak or sideways flow at just one tap, that part is the whole reason. It costs nothing to fix. Takes about two minutes. And once you find out what’s actually been sitting inside it all this time, you’ll want to check every faucet in the house tonight, not just the annoying one.

The part hiding right at the tip of your spout
Look at the end of your kitchen or bathroom faucet, where the water actually comes out. See that little screw-on cap? That’s it. Denver Water calls it a small screen that plays a big part in your home’s water. It has a short list of jobs. It shapes the water into a smooth stream. It mixes in a bit of air so the stream feels stronger than it really is. It keeps the pressure steady. It stops water from splashing when it hits a plate or your hands. And, quietly, it catches whatever tiny stuff has been floating through your pipes on the way to your glass.
That last job is the reason this whole story exists. In most American homes, this little screen has been doing that catching job for months. Sometimes years. And nobody has ever taken it off, tipped it over, or rinsed it out.
Why nobody notices, until suddenly they do
The sneaky thing about this part is that it doesn’t fail all at once. It fills up slowly. Month after month. So the flow drops a little at a time, and your brain quietly adjusts to it.
You stop noticing that filling the pasta pot used to take half as long. You stop noticing the stream used to hit the middle of the sink, not the side. You start blaming the pipes. You blame the neighborhood water pressure. You put “call plumber” on the to-do list.
Then one day you turn on someone else’s kitchen tap and it hits you: oh, that’s what water pressure is supposed to feel like.
By that point, that little screen isn’t just dusty. It’s completely packed. And what it’s packed with is the part almost nobody outside the water industry ever thinks about.
Before you unscrew it, one thing to know
Understand this before you go grab a wrench. That little mesh screen is the very last thing your drinking water passes through before it hits your glass. It’s the final gate between your pipes and your mouth. Which means whatever is trapped in there is a snapshot of what’s been floating through your home’s water supply for as long as that screen has been in place.
For most American households, that’s a snapshot going back years. And what’s in it isn’t just dust.

What’s actually stuck in there
Two things build up inside that mesh, and one of them affects roughly four out of every five American homes.
- The first is hard water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 85% of American homes get water carrying tiny amounts of dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from the ground it flowed through. When that water sits, drips, or dries out, it leaves behind a chalky white crust. It’s the same crust you see inside a kettle, around the shower drain, or on your showerhead. Inside a mesh with holes smaller than a pinhead, even a thin ring of it chokes the flow and pushes water sideways.
- The second is pipe gunk. Cleveland Water puts it plainly: the little screen collects tiny pieces of material that corrode from inside your home’s plumbing and water heater over time. If your house is more than ten or fifteen years old, some of those pieces have been floating through your pipes for years. That screen at the tip of your faucet is where they finally stop.
Mineral crust plus pipe gunk, packed into a mesh smaller than a dime. That’s your weak faucet.
The two-minute fix
Grab an old rag, an old toothbrush, and a small bowl of plain white vinegar. If the part won’t turn by hand, add pliers with masking tape wrapped around the jaws so you don’t scratch the finish.
Do this:
- Line the bottom of the sink with the rag. It catches any little piece that slips out of your fingers before it goes down the drain.
- Unscrew the tip of the spout. Grip it and turn to the left, the same way you’d loosen a jar lid. Most come off by hand. If it won’t budge, use the taped pliers. If nothing shows on the outside, you’ve got the hidden kind tucked up inside the spout, and it comes out with a small plastic key from any hardware store (a few dollars, about €3).
- Take the piece apart over the rag. You’ll see two or three little pieces. Line them up in order, or snap a phone photo so you can put them back the right way.
- Rinse each piece. If you see white crust or dark specks in the mesh, drop the pieces in the vinegar and let them soak for 30 to 60 minutes. The vinegar breaks down the crust.
- Scrub each piece gently with the toothbrush. Poke a toothpick through any hole that’s still blocked, then rinse everything well.
- Screw the pieces back on in the same order, hand-tight only. Twisting too hard can crack it.
- Turn the water on. If the flow is back to full and running straight, you’re done. If not, the screen wasn’t your problem, and something bigger is going on with your water line.
And here’s the part that actually matters most
If the story ended with “your water pressure is back,” this would be a decent home tip. It doesn’t end there.
That same little mesh isn’t only catching mineral crust and pipe gunk. According to the CDC and several U.S. water utilities, it can also be catching tiny bits of lead that flake off from older plumbing on the way to your tap.
The Michigan Department of Health notes that faucets and fittings sold before 2014 were allowed to contain up to 8% lead, even labeled “lead-free.” A newer faucet doesn’t automatically mean a lead-free path to your glass, especially if the pipes behind the wall are old.
That’s why the CDC is specific: clean your drinking water faucet screen at least every six months. If there’s construction near your home touching the water lines, clean it every month while the work goes on, because that digging can shake loose old lead bits from the pipes underground. DC Water, Philadelphia Water, and Cleveland Water all say the same.
Ask ten people you know when they last unscrewed the tip of their faucet. Nine will say “never.”
Two more things worth knowing
Cleveland Water suggests replacing the whole screen once a year and cleaning it twice in between. A new one runs about $3 to $8 (roughly €3 to €7) at any hardware store, and it swaps in the same two minutes.
If your home was built before 1986 and a young child or someone pregnant lives there, the CDC goes further: run cold water for one to two minutes before drinking or cooking, if the tap has been unused for a few hours. And never use hot tap water for drinking or baby formula. Lead comes off old pipes more easily when the water is hot.
