That fizzing reaction has been filmed thousands of times across social media, shared as the definitive test that a homemade cleaner works. The visual is dramatic. The chemistry feels active. But the real story playing out in that glass is the opposite of what most people believe.

What the fizz actually reveals

The spectacular reaction between vinegar and baking soda isn’t a sign of increased cleaning power. It’s a sign of chemical neutralization. When vinegar touches baking soda, an acid-base reaction starts instantly. The acetic acid in vinegar areacts with the baking soda to produce sodium acetate, carbon dioxide, and water.

Once the bubbles settle, what remains in the glass barely qualifies as a detergent anymore. After the complete reaction, the mixture becomes a solution of sodium acetate in water, with a pH close to neutral, between 6.5 and 7.5 depending on the proportions used. The alkalinity of the baking soda is neutralized, and so is the acidity of the vinegar. What’s left is a slightly saline solution with modest cleaning power compared to either product used individually.

After this chemical reaction, the mixture becomes essentially salt water. Adding baking soda to white vinegar neutralizes its cleaning strength. The same holds true in reverse. The viral cleaning hack contradicts basic chemistry.

When the combination actually works

Not everything about the glass test should be dismissed. The release of carbon dioxide produces a mechanical effect, not a chemical one, that can dislodge certain residues through simple agitation. That multitude of tiny bubbles has mechanical properties against dirt.

This principle makes the trick useful in clogged drains. A commonly used method involves pouring baking soda into the pipes first, followed by vinegar. The effervescence generated can help displace certain debris. The action is physical, not chemical, but it works because the reaction happens inside the pipe, where the mechanical force matters more than the neutralized solution left behind.

For hard water or limescale, the effect is particularly clear. If you’re hoping to use this mixture to dissolve mineral deposits, the rapid reaction with baking soda will neutralize the acidity of the vinegar, rendering its descaling effect much less effective. The acid gets canceled before it can do its job.

How pros apply both products

When cleaning a surface, technicians deliberately avoid mixing the two products in advance in the same bottle. The trick is to apply vinegar to the surface first, let it sit to dissolve limescale, then scrub with baking soda to take advantage of its slightly abrasive effect. This prevents the chemical reaction from canceling out the benefits.

Each product works alone, at full strength, before giving way to the other. Baking soda then acts as a light mechanical abrasive on a surface already attacked by the acid. Using these two products together is therefore no more effective than using them separately, and often less effective. That conclusion contradicts quite a few viral hacks seen on social media.

Before improvising a homemade mixture, it’s better to ask what problem you’re trying to solve: grease, limescale, an odor, or a clog. Each case calls for a specific product, used pure. White vinegar remains formidable alone against limescale and soap scum. Baking soda, meanwhile, keeps its value as a dry powder for scrubbing or absorbing odors, without ever meeting a drop of vinegar beforehand.

Why the test still matters

The glass test retains its usefulness despite everything. It shows in real time, in a few seconds, what plays out on an invisible scale in all those grandma recipes shared without reflection. The foam rises, the foam falls, chemistry has spoken, and the miracle two-ingredient bottle joins the shelf of deeply rooted misconceptions.

If your kitchen counters need descaling, reach for vinegar alone. If your sink needs scrubbing, grab baking soda by itself. The fizz makes good content, but it doesn’t make a better cleaner. That is the trick.
