She used to blame her detergent. Her towels came out stiff. Her husband’s shirts had that faint sour smell after every wash. Her kid’s white school shirts came out with chalky streaks she’d rub off before drop-off. So she did what a lot of us do. She kept upgrading. Bigger jugs. Fancier brands. The one with enzymes. The one with scent boosters. The one the influencer swore by. Every jump in price, every promise on the label, and the same disappointing pile coming out of the dryer.
Then a repair guy showed up to fix her washer’s noisy spin, took one look inside, and told her the soap wasn’t the problem. Her clothes weren’t dirty because her detergent was weak. They were dirty because of something she was doing every single load, thinking it was the smart, time-saving move.
It costs nothing to fix. It takes zero extra time. And once she stopped doing it, the cheap bottle from the bottom shelf started beating the pricey stuff she used to buy.

The part almost nobody questions
There’s a strange logic most of us follow with our washer. If the drum can fit the clothes, the machine can wash the clothes, right? Push it all in, shut the door, hit start. One less load to do later.
Except it doesn’t work that way. And it costs you on two sides at once. It costs you on soap (because you keep buying more of it, or fancier versions of it, trying to fix something soap can’t fix). And it costs you on the washer itself, in a way you won’t see for years, and won’t be cheap when you do.
Whirlpool spells this out in its own help pages: the white streaks, the stiffness, the sour smell that won’t quit are usually not about the detergent at all. They’re about how the wash cycle actually works, and one specific everyday habit that quietly breaks it. Maytag says almost the exact same thing on its own help pages.
Angi, the home-services company that connects millions of Americans with contractors, puts a real dollar figure on the other cost. Their 2026 guide to washer repairs says the average fix runs about $175 (roughly €160), but jumps to $450 or more (about €415+) when this same habit wears out the drum’s bearings, motor, or drain. Repair techs call it the single biggest silent killer of front-loading washers, chopping years off machines that should easily last a decade.
Why your clothes come out worse the fuller you load
Today’s washers, especially the water-saving ones almost everyone has now, don’t clean clothes by drowning them in water. They clean by letting clothes tumble against each other in a small amount of water, with the soap working the fabric as it moves around. The rubbing is the cleaning. Take away the room to move, and you take away the wash.
That’s why the sour smell keeps coming back on your husband’s shirts even after a full cycle. Clorox’s own laundry guide lays out the chain in plain terms: when soap doesn’t rinse out all the way, it stays behind stuck in the fabric. That leftover soap then traps the bacteria that make the sour, musty smell in the first place. So the more soap that gets trapped in there, the worse it smells, even though the load technically “washed.”
The white streaks work the same way. When water can’t move freely through the pile during the rinse, the soap has nowhere to go. It dries onto the fabric instead of flushing out. It looks like a lint problem. It’s really a rinse problem.
And there’s the machine itself. When a drum is packed past what it can handle, it spins off-balance. That uneven spin puts constant pressure on the bearings behind the drum (the little wheels that let the drum spin smoothly). EasyBear Appliance Repair, whose techs work on washers and dryers across all the major brands, calls this the number-one reason bearings burn out early on front-loaders. Fixing it runs $350 to $550 (about €320 to €505), because the whole drum has to come apart. On a machine older than about eight years, most techs will tell you it’s not worth fixing. You buy a new washer instead.

The trick her repair guy showed her
Here is what he said, standing in her laundry room, pointing at the open drum.
Stop trying to squeeze in one more thing.
Not “wash smaller loads.” That wastes water and power, and today’s washers actually run longer trying to balance a half-empty drum. The rule he gave her is simpler, and it comes straight from Tide’s own load-size guide, which they call the palm test.
Load your clothes like you normally would. Then stick your flat hand into the drum, palm against the clothes, back of your hand toward the top. If your hand fits comfortably between the top of the pile and the top of the drum, the load is right. If you have to force your hand in, or you can’t fit it at all, pull a couple of things out.
A gap about a hand’s width across the top is what lets water move through the fabric, lets the soap rinse out clean, and lets the drum spin balanced instead of grinding on its own bearings.
Repair techs cited by Angi put it in inches: leave about six inches (roughly 15 cm) of open space between the top of your clothes and the top of the drum. Either way you measure it, the target is the same: the drum should look about three-quarters full when you shut the door, not stuffed to the brim.
If you’ve been doing what she was doing, you’re not being dumb. You’re being efficient in the way the machine seems to be asking you to. It isn’t.

Do this on your next load
Try it once, tonight or tomorrow, and watch what the same soap you already own can actually do.
- Load your laundry like usual, then stop before it feels tight. If you had to press the last few items in, take them back out and save them for the next load.
- Do the palm test. Slide your flat hand into the drum against the clothes. If your hand fits with room to spare, you’re good. If it doesn’t, pull items out until it does.
- Aim for about three-quarters full, or roughly six inches (15 cm) of open space at the top.
- Skip the “just one more towel.” That last item is the one that turns a good wash into a bad one.
- Keep using the detergent you have. It probably works just fine. It just needs room to do its job.
Cheaper detergent didn’t magically get better in her laundry room. What changed was that the soap finally had room to work. Any soap, at any price, needs water and space to do its job. Give it both, and the cheap bottle beats the pricey jug you’re overpaying for. Take either one away, and no amount of money you throw at the soap aisle will fix what a hand’s width of empty space would have fixed for free.
