Most people treat vinegar and baking soda like a power duo for washer maintenance. The fizzing reaction feels productive, and the routine has been passed around social media enough times that it seems like proven wisdom. But when you look at what actually happens during that cycle, the method falls apart. The ingredients you think are cleaning your machine are canceling each other out before they ever touch the buildup.

Baking soda alone does not work either. It lacks the capacity to break down mineral deposits or dissolve the film left behind by laundry soap. Vinegar could work, but only in volumes most households would never use. Fernández explains that you would need up to 2 liters of industrial vinegar or at least 4 liters of kitchen vinegar to achieve a real descaling effect. Few people are willing to pour that much liquid into their appliance, and even fewer know those numbers exist.

The ingredient that actually works sits on the same shelf. Citric acid, the organic acid already used to descale coffee makers and clean bathroom fixtures, outperforms vinegar in every measurable way. It has a higher acidity level, which means it dissolves mineral deposits more effectively. At the same time, it remains less corrosive than vinegar, so it is less likely to damage the internal components of your washing machine.

How citric acid removes buildup without the damage

Citric acid works because it targets the chemistry of limescale directly. When hot water circulates through the drum, the acid comes into contact with calcium and magnesium deposits. It breaks them down cycle after cycle, loosening the buildup that vinegar and baking soda leave untouched.

The method is straightforward. One household tips outlet recommends pouring between 100 and 150 grams of citric acid into an empty drum. Fernández suggests placing 4 tablespoons directly into the tub before running a long hot water cycle at around 60 degrees Celsius. The water carries the acid through every channel, hose, and surface inside the machine. Over time, the mineral scale detaches, and the residue from previous washes dissolves.

This is not a disinfectant, and it will not replace your regular detergent. Citric acid targets limescale and soap buildup specifically. Its effects become visible with consistent use, not after a single treatment. If your washer smells musty or your clothes come out with a dull finish, the problem is often residue that has been accumulating for months. The maintenance rhythm that prevents odor and buildup

Fernández recommends cleaning your washing machine once every 3 to 4 months to maintain performance, prevent odors, and ensure your laundry comes out truly clean. If you live in an area with hard water, or if your machine develops a stale smell quickly, you can repeat the process more often.

After each cycle, leave the washer door and detergent drawer open. Humidity trapped inside creates the perfect environment for mildew and bacteria. Airflow keeps the interior dry and limits the conditions that cause odor and buildup in the first place. This habit, combined with regular citric acid treatments, keeps your machine running longer and smelling fresher.

Some manufacturers issue cautions. Bosch, for example, advises against using pure citric acid on rubber seals, which are more sensitive to concentrated acids. They recommend following the instructions in your washer’s manual. Avoid applying the powder directly to gaskets or preparing concentrated mixtures in closed containers. Never combine vinegar and baking soda in a sealed space, as the reaction produces gas.
