Mutato by Uli Westphal

Fruits, roots and vegetables are, in nature, dynamic in shape and color.  What you see at your local supermarket is the result of some very strict corporate rules that define how produce must look, leaving much of the world’s food discarded and ignored.  The artist Uli Westphal has started his “Mutato Project” to document the dynamic nature of produce in a way that captures the imagination.  Twisted lemons, tortured tomatoes and mutated mushrooms are Westphal’s subject matter, which are then displayed alone and in colorful rows and columns.  The result is pure visual candy, but not without meaning.  Westphal feels that “The complete absence of botanical anomalies in our supermarkets has caused us to regard the consistency of produce presented there as natural.”  It makes us wonder– where does all this mutated food go, and does it present the same flavor as the uniform foods we’re used to?  Thanks for opening our eyes, Uli!
