The Solar Impulse HB SIA has broken the world record for the longest distance traveled by a solar powered aircraft. The slender machine is fueled by four 10 horsepower motors fed by 11,628 photo voltaic panels and traveled a distance of 3,700 miles. This form of transportation is efficient and effective while reducing fuel emissions and saving energy with its aerodynamic glider style design. In case of back up, the plane is also equipped with massive lithium-ion batteries that can be used if necessary. Lightweight construction of the aircraft has it weighing in at just about as much as the average car with an impressive wing span of 63.4 meters. [via designboom]
