You keep your yard tidy, your gutters clear, and your windows screened. But every summer, snakes still find their way inside. The problem isn’t what you’re doing outside. It’s a barely visible flaw at the base of your front door, and most homeowners have no idea it’s there.

In warm, wooded regions across the country, reports of snakes entering homes spike dramatically each summer. The detail that draws them in isn’t dramatic or obvious. It’s a gap you probably walk past every day without noticing. And for snakes seeking cooler refuge from heat and drought, that tiny opening reads like an invitation.

Why snake encounters are climbing nationwide

Snake sightings near and inside homes have surged in recent years. Between 2012 and 2022, observations of snakes around or inside residences jumped 28 percent. Heat waves and prolonged drought across 62 percent of affected territories have pushed this trend even higher.

Emergency services and veterinary departments report rising call volumes related to snake presence, particularly in southern regions and on the outskirts of major metropolitan areas. In 2024 alone, southern fire and rescue departments recorded a 17 percent increase in snake-related interventions compared to 2023, according to government reports. Prevention has become a real concern for homeowners.

The gap under your door is the entry point

Most people assume snakes slip in through open windows or cracks in foundations. Not true. A 2022 study on reptile-habitat cohabitation revealed that 83 percent of snake intrusions into homes occurred through low openings, primarily under doors.

The mechanism is precise. A gap smaller than 2 cm beneath a door is enough space for a young viper to pass through. Snakes detect cooler zones using their Jacobson’s organ, an extremely sensitive heat receptor that picks up thermal variations. If cool air escapes from under your door, that temperature difference alone can prompt them to investigate and enter.

Older wood or PVC doors amplify this risk considerably. Poorly sealed or sagging doors create exactly the kind of opening snakes exploit. A 2020 study found that nearly 48 percent of single-family home entry doors have thermal insulation defects at their base. That’s 48 percent of doors functioning as potential wildlife entry points.

How to close the gap and keep them out

The fix isn’t complicated, but it requires attention to timing and door maintenance. Avoid leaving doors and sliding glass doors open unattended, especially early morning between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or late afternoon from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. These are peak activity periods when snakes are most mobile and searching for shelter.

Check the clearance beneath your entry door. If you can slide two fingers under it easily, snakes can slip through too. Addressing sagging hinges, warped frames, or worn weatherstripping closes the gap that draws them inside. The placement of that seal does the work.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of snakes are harmless. Only two species of vipers, the aspic and the péliade, are venomous, with fewer than 250 envenomation cases recorded annually according to poison control centers. Most intrusions involve non-threatening species simply seeking cool refuge, not confrontation.

It’s the thermal gap that matters

Snakes don’t need an obvious entry point. They need a temperature differential and a space barely wide enough to flatten their bodies. Your door doesn’t have to look broken to function as an access point. It just has to leak cool air.

The gap beneath your door frames your home as either sealed or accessible. Closing that space is the simplest version of prevention to copy. That one adjustment makes all the difference between a secure threshold and an unintentional invitation.
