You buy the better detergent. You run the hottest cycle. You even rinse your plates under the tap before loading them. And every single time you open the dishwasher, your drinking glasses come out with that dull, streaky, foggy film. Wipe one with a towel and it looks fine for a second. Fill it with water and the haze is back.
Most people blame the detergent, switch brands, then blame the dishwasher and start shopping for a new one. Almost nobody looks at the thing that’s actually causing it. The fix costs about six bucks (roughly 6 euros) and takes under a minute a month. But if you don’t know what to look for, you can go years without spotting it.
And it isn’t just about how the glasses look. Left alone long enough, those spots stop wiping off.

Cloudy isn’t always cloudy
Here’s the part nobody tells you. There are two totally different kinds of cloudy glass, and only one of them can be fixed.
The first kind is film. That’s mineral gunk sitting on top of the glass. Rub a damp cloth with a little vinegar over it and the haze lifts right off. Annoying, but you can undo it.
The second kind is etching, and etching is forever. Glassware maker Libbey explains it plainly: the glass surface itself gets eaten away, leaving tiny pits you can’t polish out. Whirlpool says the same thing in its own guidance: once etching happens, you can’t reverse it. The glass is physically damaged. No cleaner brings it back.
The easy home test: put a drop of white vinegar on the cloudy spot and wait five minutes. If it wipes clean, it’s just film. If it looks exactly the same, the glass is etched, and that one’s done.
Why it keeps happening
Cloudy glasses show up worse in some homes than others, and where you live matters more than most people think. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, roughly 85% of American homes have hard water. Hard water is just tap water carrying a lot of minerals (mostly calcium and magnesium, the same ones that leave that white crust on your kettle or shower head). When that water dries on a glass, the minerals stay behind as spots. Consumer Reports has been saying it for years: hard water not only leaves spots, it also makes your detergent work worse.
So people upgrade detergent, run hotter cycles, or throw in “boosters.” Some of that helps a little. None of it fixes the real problem: water is sitting on the glass instead of running off it during the final rinse.
That’s the whole thing in one line. Water clings to the glass, dries in place, and leaves what it was carrying behind.
The detail almost no one uses
The fix has been sitting inside your dishwasher this whole time, about six inches from the detergent slot you’ve been babying for years.
Open your dishwasher door and take a look at the inside panel. Right next to the detergent compartment, there’s a second small compartment with its own cap or dial. Most people have opened a dishwasher a thousand times and never once opened that second one.
That’s a rinse-aid dispenser, and every major dishwasher brand builds it in on purpose. Bosch explains rinse aid this way: it’s a liquid that helps water slide off dishes instead of beading up on them, which is exactly what you want during the final rinse. Consumer Reports put it plainly: every dishwasher manufacturer recommends using rinse aid, no matter how the machine dries. Their labs use it in every dishwasher test they run.
Without it, water beads up on your glasses and dries in place, leaving spots, streaks, and film. With it, water rolls off in a thin sheet and takes the minerals with it. Dishes come out spot-free from the machine, no towel needed.
The catch: rinse aid isn’t in your detergent pod, even the all-in-one kind. Whirlpool says pods contain only a tiny amount, and you should still use separate rinse aid.
Do this once a month
A bottle of any name-brand rinse aid runs about $5 to $8 (roughly 5 to 7 euros) at any grocery store, and one bottle lasts four to six weeks. Setup takes under a minute.
Do this:
- Open your dishwasher door. Find the small compartment right next to the detergent one, usually marked with a snowflake or fan icon.
- Twist the cap off, pour rinse aid in until it reaches the “full” line, close it.
- Most modern dishwashers have a little indicator light on the front panel that turns on when the rinse aid runs low. Refill when it lights up.
- If you’re in a hard-water area (most of the U.S., and plenty of the U.K. and southern Europe too), turn the dispense dial to a higher setting. Your manual shows where the dial is.
Run one normal cycle and check a glass. You’ll usually see the difference the first load.
Every cycle you run without rinse aid in a hard-water home nudges your glassware closer to the permanent kind of cloudiness. Fill the compartment once a month and skip the problem.
Your detergent was probably fine the whole time. It was the compartment next to it doing nothing.
