Buyer’s Guide to Men’s Cologne

Some men wear the same scent for years while others change their colognes as often as they change their outfits. Whether you’re loyal to one scent or an adventurous type, you can make more informed buying choices if you understand how colognes work. Looking to boost your desirability with the right scent? Here’s what to keep in mind as you shop for your signature whiff:

STRENGTH

Colognes come in different categories depending on their strength. The major difference is in the perfume concentration mixed with alcohol. High fragrance concentrations have higher percentage volumes of perfume oils and less alcohol content per volume. Colognes typically come in five different strengths:

  • Eau Fraiche – The lightest fragrance with an oil concentration between one and three percent. Best for sensitive skin, as it has a low alcohol concentration and high water content.
  • Eau de cologne – A light fragrance that fades within a couple of hours. Contains two to four percent oil concentration.
  • Eau de toilette (EDT) – Midrange concentration with five to fifteen percent oil concentration. The scent may linger for about three hours.
  • Eau de parfum (EDP) – The scent may linger for up to six hours. Has a perfume concentration of 15 to 20 percent.
  • Parfum: A high concentration perfume extract with twenty to forty percent oil concentration. The scent may last anywhere from six to twelve hours.

Most of the best-selling colognes for men are usually in the EDP and EDT categories. This is because one application tends to last throughout an event such as a date or a meeting.

FRAGRANCE NOTES

Fragrances are usually made up of three distinct scales.

The top notes are the scents you smell when you first spray the cologne. The top notes are the lightest, so they dissipate soon after application. Some common top notes include citrus (e.g. lemon), herbs (e.g. sage), and light fruits (e.g. grapefruit).

Heart notes are the middle notes. They transition in as the top notes disappear. They are the main scent of the cologne and are often a well-rounded combination of floral tones infused with oils and spices. Popular heart tones include jasmine, geranium, and nutmeg.

Base notes are the rich notes that remain after all other notes have disappeared. The base notes mix with the heart notes to create the full body of the cologne. The function of a base note is to provide a lasting impression. Examples of popular base notes include musk, sandalwood, and oakmoss.

Perfume for Men: PRICES

When it comes to fragrances, price isn’t always a measure of quality. It is possible to buy a solid scent that works for your body type and smells great without breaking the bank.

In most cases, even the most expensive colognes have ingredients that only make up for less than five percent of the total cost.

Cologne prices are influenced by the quality of ingredients, artisanship, packaging, exclusivity, and branding.

That said, it is difficult to decide on what’s a fair price when shopping for colognes. The best considerations should be your budget, how the different notes smell on your skin, and the oil concentration. Looks like it’s time to sniff through the bestselling and best smelling colognes for men!

  1. One of my favorite colognes for men that is
on my list so for is Obsession for men
6.7 FL. OZ By Calvin Klein and the cologne
is on the very top of my favorite colognes
    for men.

  2. You can get samples on a bunch of different websites. I like to pick up some travel sizes at microperfumes dot com.

Hopefully that shows up as a reply to my boy Phillip Rios up there.

  3. Eau De Toilette’s are a complete waste of money. One should only buy Eau De Parfum as the scent lasts much longer because it is oil based.

  4. I always go back to Halston z-14 been wearing it since the late 70s. Never fails to get compliments from the ladies. Besides that it will not break the bank!

  5. I own 6 of these colognes already. I spend a lot of money on my personal hygiene and clothing. I agree 100 % with all the choices in this article. These colognes are absolutely the best. I get a lot of questions and compliments from people when I wear them.

  6. I always have the classic original Green Police in my home. I was surprised by the fact that Armani Code wasn’t on the list it should be. I will definitely try some of these that you have selected in the article.

  7. I’m going to have to do some experimentation, for years I have been satisfied with; hanna mori, Jean paul gauthier, chanel allure sport and bleu de channel. Maybe I’m just to old fashioned. These fragrances have sufficed for me for years, decades. I have ALWAYS recieved complements. If something works why change?

  8. Learnt few new names mentioned over here. Personally, I didn’t like both Armani and Dior Sauvage perfumes but I’m a big fan of Invictus and YSL fragrances. I would also suggest few good names missing from the list i.e. Azzaro Chrome , Azzaro Wanted and Versace Dylan Blue.

  9. All the listed Colognes are great! I have 9 of the 12 listed! But as Mark Fletcher has noted…. I too was surprised that CHANEL BLUE, was not mentioned.

  10. These are all good I’ve had a couple of them I’m surprised that Spice Bomb or Tom Ford Black Orchid didn’t make the list but these are a few of the best lol I’ll be picking up a couple of them soon

  11. A decent list, however:
#1, 3, 8, 12- overpriced, more affordable, similar scents available.
#2, 5, 6- extremely popular, get these if you want to smell like everyone else.
#4- decent scent, average at best.
    #7, 9, 10 – the top of the list!
#11- not even the best of his line.

  12. I was not surprised to see my top three on the list. Not to say, but I will try others on this list, thx.
