If you keep buying new drinking glasses because the old ones come out chipped, always in the same spot on the rim, you’re not alone. Most people shrug and blame the glasses. Some spend more on nicer ones, hoping that fixes it. It doesn’t.
The problem isn’t your glasses, your detergent, or your dishwasher.
It’s one loading habit almost every household does without thinking, and once someone points it out, you’ll notice it every time you open the dishwasher.

Take a look at your chipped glasses. There’s a pattern.
Grab a few glasses you’ve been meaning to throw out and hold them under a good light. You’ll spot the same thing on almost all of them. A tiny nick on the rim. A rough patch you feel before you see it. A little hairline running along the edge.
The damage isn’t random. It shows up in the same place, over and over. That’s a huge clue.
The American Cleaning Institute (1), the nonprofit that sets many of the cleaning standards used across the US, says drinking glasses have to be spaced out in the dishwasher so they can’t bump against each other during the wash. When they can bump, they chip. Sub-Zero and Wolf, which build some of the pricier dishwashers on the market, say the same thing in their troubleshooting guide (2): dishes need to sit securely so they don’t tip over or knock into each other while the machine’s running.
Whirlpool’s loading guide (3) adds one small detail that changes everything. Those plastic sticks poking up out of your dishwasher racks have a real name and a real job. They’re called tines, and they’re not just there to hold your dishes upright. They’re separators, meant to keep your dishes from smacking into each other while the water is moving.
That word, “separators,” is where this whole mystery starts to unravel.
Your dishwasher isn’t the bad guy here
Before we get to what’s really breaking your glasses, let’s clear something up. Your dishwasher isn’t beating up your glassware. It’s actually pretty gentle.
Restaurant dishwashers, the industrial kind, blast water at 10 to 20 PSI (0.7 to 1.4 bar) according to design filings with the US Patent and Trademark Office (4). A home dishwasher runs at just 2 to 8 PSI (0.14 to 0.55 bar). That’s less pressure than a garden hose barely turned on. It’s set that low on purpose, so it doesn’t wreck the fragile stuff we use every day.
So the water on its own isn’t chipping your glasses. A glass sitting steady on the top rack will come out fine, wash after wash, for years.
So if the machine is gentle, and the top rack is where glassware belongs, what’s actually knocking your rims off?
The rim tells you exactly what happened
Chips don’t just appear out of nowhere. Glass repair pros explain it in plain terms: chips happen when a thin, sharp edge gets hit by something hard, and the thinner and sharper that edge, the more easily it chips (5). The rim of your drinking glass is the thinnest, sharpest part of the whole thing. It’s the first part to hit something, and the first part to break.
So every chip on your glass is basically a little record of a crash inside your dishwasher. And a chip that shows up in the same spot every time means the same crash is happening the same way, every single wash.
The question is what your glass is crashing into. And this is the piece almost nobody figures out on their own, because you have to know how you’re loading it wrong before you can even see it.
The mistake almost everyone makes without knowing
Open your dishwasher and look at the top rack. You’ll see rows of skinny plastic sticks pointing straight up. Those are the tines.

Most people load a drinking glass by flipping it upside down and pushing it straight down onto one of those sticks, so the stick ends up inside the glass. It looks neat. You can fit a lot of glasses that way. It feels like the obvious way to do it.
But it’s wrong, and it’s the one habit that’s chipping your glasses. When you shove a glass down over a tine, two things go wrong at once, and both of them chew up your rim.
- Your glass is now balancing on a single point. The rim isn’t touching anything solid. The whole glass is teetering on the tip of that plastic stick, which is jammed up into the bottom of the glass. Even at just 2 to 8 PSI, the moving water swirls around the tub enough to rock anything that isn’t sitting stable. Your glass wobbles the whole cycle, and every wobble nudges its rim closer to whatever’s next to it.
- Your glasses end up sitting way too close to each other. The stick that should keep them apart is instead lifting one glass into the air, so the rims of the glasses next to it end up almost touching. Frigidaire says it plainly in the fine print of its loading guide (6): damage happens when dishes touch each other during a wash. Electrolux says the exact same thing (7). Every time your rims meet, they tap. Tap them thousands of times, and you get a chip. Always in the same spot.
If you just realized that’s how I’ve been loading my glasses my whole life, you’re in good company. The brands that write these manuals know it, which is why they slip the real answer into one quiet sentence most people never read.
The fix costs nothing and takes zero extra time
This is what to do differently, starting with your next load:
- Load your glasses upside down between the tines, not over them. The rim sits flat on the wire rack, and the sticks come up on either side like little fence posts holding it in place. Sub-Zero and Wolf spell it out (2): “Load glasses between the tines, not straddling them.” Every big brand, including Haier (8) and KitchenAid (9), says the same thing.
- Leave a little breathing room between glasses. About half an inch (roughly 1.25 cm) is a good rule of thumb. If you can slide a fingertip between two glasses and neither budges, you’re good.
- Use the fold-down stemware clips if your rack has them. Whirlpool notes these clips are built specifically to hold wine glass stems steady so the bowls can’t sway around (3).
- Don’t cram the rack full. If glasses are already touching when you slide the rack in, they’ll definitely bang around once the water gets going.
- Push the rack in and pull it out slowly. Sub-Zero and Wolf warns that slamming the rack causes glasses to knock together right when they’re most likely to chip (2).
That’s it. No new products to buy. No fancy cycle. No going back to washing by hand.
One honest note before you replace anything
The fix above stops the chips. But there’s one kind of damage it won’t undo: glasses that have gone permanently cloudy and look foggy no matter how many times you wash them. If you soak one in white vinegar for 10 minutes and it still looks hazy, that’s not chipping, that’s etching, and it’s a totally different problem. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting page (10) explains that etching happens when hot water, low-mineral (soft) water, and modern detergent slowly wear away the surface of the glass. Loading them differently won’t reverse it. Using less detergent, running shorter cycles, and skipping the sanitize setting will slow it down going forward.
