The cycle is over, the dishwasher beeps, and the door stays shut until someone unloads it hours later. Yet more and more people open it a crack as soon as the cycle ends. It’s not a whim: some manufacturers now do it automatically. Here’s what it’s for and why it’s recommended.
Why open the door right after the cycle
At the end of a cycle, the inside of the dishwasher is hot and saturated with steam. If the door stays closed, that moisture condenses as the machine cools: droplets fall on the glasses, water pools in the hollows of cups and plastic containers, and dishes come out damp.
Opening the door a few inches as soon as the cycle ends lets the hot, humid air escape. The dishes are still hot, so the remaining water evaporates quickly. Result: drier dishes, fewer water spots on glasses, and no musty smell from a sealed, damp machine.
Manufacturers do it themselves
The proof that it works: some brands have built the gesture into their machines. Whirlpool offers a Door Open Dry option, sometimes called Auto Open Dry, Natural Dry or Air Dry depending on the model: at the end of the cycle, the door opens a few inches by itself to vent out the moisture and humid air. Bosch has a similar feature, AutoAir, which releases the door at the end of the drying cycle so fresh air comes in and moisture escapes.
How to do it right
- Wait for the end of the cycle, including the drying phase, then open the door a few inches.
- Mind the steam: keep your face away, the first puff is very hot. Be careful if the dishwasher is under a wooden countertop: the steam shouldn’t hit it every day.
- Leave it 15 to 30 minutes, then unload: the bottom rack first, so water from the top rack doesn’t drip onto it.
- Use rinse aid: it helps water slide off instead of forming droplets.
- Keep the door safe: if there are small children or pets in the house, don’t leave a half-open door with knives and hot dishes accessible.
Bonus: a cleaner machine
Letting the interior air out also limits the damp environment where odors and mildew develop around the door seal. Wipe the seal and clean the filter regularly, and your dishwasher will stay fresh longer.
The limit
If your dishwasher already has an automatic door opening or a fan-assisted drying system, no need to do it by hand. And plastic will always dry less well than glass or ceramic: it doesn’t hold heat.
Small kitchen habits make a big difference, like the appliance firefighters say to unplug before bed or the paper test for your fridge door. And some kitchens are even saying goodbye to the microwave.
A door open a few inches and fifteen minutes of patience. That’s the trick.
